Über Präsentationen und Vorträge: „I don’t have time to practice. I’ve got to give impromptu talks, and the results may vary.“

Zu Angestellten: „I need the impossible done by Friday at 2 p.m. Can you do it?“

Im Dialog mit seiner Frau: „I am your wife“, I told him, „not your employee.“ „If you were my employee“, he said, „I would fire you.“

Über Urlaub, in dem er sich Malaria zugezogen hat: „I came very close to dying. That’s my lesson for taking a vacation: vacations will kill you.“

Über Start-ups: „The start-up life is akin to eating glass and staring into the abyss.“

Über Purpose: „Maybe I read too many comics as a kid. In the comics it alway seems like they are trying to save the world. It seemed like one should try to make the world a better place because the inverse makes no sense. The only thing that makes sense to do is strive for greater collective enlightenment.“

Über Herkunft: „South Africa was not a happy-go-lucky place, and that has an impact on you. We saw some really rough stuff … that changes how you view risk. You don’t grow up thinking getting a job is the hard part. That’s not interesting enough.“

Über sein Ziel: „I’m not an Investor. I like to make technologies real that I think are important for the future and useful in some sort of way.“

Die Mentalität eines Samurai

Über seine Mentalität: „My mentality is that of a samurai. I would rather commit seppuku than fail.“

Über die Zukunft: „Humans need to become a multiplanetary species.“

Wenn Mitarbeiter sich beklagen: „Fine. You’re off the project, an I am now the CEO of the project. I will do your job and be CEO of two companies at the same time. I will deliver it.“

Über Magie: „If you go back a few hundred years, what we take for granted today would seem like magic-being able to talk to people over long distances, to transmit images, flying, accessing vast amounts of data like an oracle. These are all things that would have been considered magic a few hundred years ago.“

Über Innovation: „The first step is to establish that something is possible; then probability will occur.“

Über CEOs: „The path to the CEO’s office should not be through the CFO’s office, and it should not be through the marketing department. It needs to be through engineering and design.“

Optimistischer Macher

Über Risikokapital: „I think the best way to attract venture capital is to try and come up with a demonstration of whatever product or service it is and ideally take that as far as you can. Just see if you can sell that to real customers and start generating some momentum. The further along you can get with that, the more likely you are to get funding.“

Über Optimismus: „I always have optimism, but I’m realistic. It was not with the expectation of great success that I started Tesla or SpaceX … It’s just that I thought they were important enough to do anyway.“

Über Risiko: „It’s OK to have your eggs in one basket as long as you control what happens to that basket.“

Übers Leben: „I could either watch it happen or be a part of it.“

Über Premiumpreise: „I do think there is a lot of potential if you have a compelling product and people are willing to pay a premium for that. I think that is what Apple has shown. You can buy a much cheaper cell phone or laptop, but Apple’s product is so much better than the alternative, and people are willing to pay that premium.“

Über Marken: „Brand is just a perception, and perception will match reality over time. Sometimes it will be ahead, other times it will be behind. But brand is simply a collective impression some have about a product.“
